Creating Polaroid Transfers

Many citizen have told me that the first time they saw exchange image and emulsion transfers; they were wholly enchanted and wanted to find out how these processes are done. About half of my workshop participants have never been complex in photography or any other art form but want to generate transfers. They bring old family slides and tour pictures, or borrow images to use. Because the processes are relatively easy, these citizen often leave my workshops with master­pieces after just one afternoon of hands-on experience.

The other workshop participants are professionals who have been work­ing in photography or as artists in discrete media for many years, and who want to eye additional techniques. So in response to the needs of begin­ners, intermediates, and professionals, I've poured roughly all I know about exchange image and emulsion transfers into this book. No matter what level you are at, you, too, can, in petite more than an after­noon of application, have the delight of making your own masterpieces.

Creating a Transfer

Basically, to generate an image or emulsion transfer, you expose an image on­to extended range peel-apart film via one of three methods: using a camera with a film possessor to expose an image directly onto film; using an enlarger to scheme a slide, trans­parency, or negative onto film; using a slide printer to exchange 35mm slides or negatives onto film. Whichever recipe you choose, the key ingredient is the film holder. These print films have three main parts: a light-sensitive negative containing dyes, a obvious that receives the image from the negative, and a foil pod con­taining sufficient developing reagent to construct one picture. As you pull the film straight through the steel rollers in the film holder, the pod is broken, and the developer spreads evenly over the film. The dyes then migrate from the negative to the obvious (see the drawing below).

To generate a image transfer, instead of letting the film construct fully onto the obvious print for the usual 6o to 90 seconds, you pull apart the film early, after io to 15 seconds. Next, you place the negative face down on other surface, such as dampened water­color paper, and press it with a roller. The dyes from the negative contin­ue developing and in the process are "transferred" onto the chosen recep­tor surface. After i to 2. Minutes, you slowly peel the negative off the receptor surface. Discard the negative. (Because petite dye is left in the negative, you can't it for other transfer-unless only a faint ghost image is desired.) You can then manipulate the resulting image on its new outside by scraping and rubbing the still-wet dyes of the emulsion before it dries. And after the exchange dries, you can additional apply your creative touch by hand coloring the transferred image. Emulsion transfers have been called the next step in the cre­ative process of transferred and manipulated images. Emulsion transfers are much bolder and more colorful and dynamic than the subtle image transfers. Although you work with the same tool and film for emulsion transfers as for image transfers, the results are wholly differ­ent. Instead of using the negative, you use the obvious part of the peel-apart film. During this process, the image is exposed, and the print is fully developed for 6o to 90 seconds. Next, take off the transparent emulsion layer by soaking the developed print in hot water. Once the emulsion is loose, in cold water detach it from its backing. At this point, you can exchange the thin emulsion sculpt, stretch, wrinkle, and tear it into dissimilar shapes; and hand color it if you want to.

One of the best parts about both the image- and emulsion-transfer processes is that you don't need a great deal of costly photographic tool and supplies, or a darkroom. You also don't need a photogra­phy background since the technical basics are quite simple. Beginning with good images (35mm slides are the best to begin with for slide printers) does help, but a range of subjects and images will work beautifully.

As with just about anyone done in-house, creating photo Ids on location will save money. This description will cover several different pieces of tool and supplies required. Although a dinky astounding at first, once all the pieces are put together, creating a photo Id is very easy and requires dinky time. All Id card printers are compatible with Pc systems running Windows Xp and Vista and many are now compatible with Mac computers running Mac Osx or higher. Linux capable Id card printers are hit and miss.

The first thing any enterprise will need to create photo identification badges in-house is a photo Id card printer. There are several models available from manufacturers such as Fargo, Magicard, Polaroid and Evolis. These printers almost all print edge-to-edge Id cards in full high-resolution color. A few options that can be superior in a printer are the potential to print on both sides, encode smart cards and write to magnetic stripes. Printers also vary by printing speed, hopper capacity and other technical variables.

Almost all Id card printers artificial today use a process called die sublimation, which uses a printer ribbon with four panels. These panels are yellow, magenta, cyan and black (Ymck). Many include a fifth panel called an overlay, which places a clear panel over the printed card to extend the life of the image and forestall scratches.

Die sublimation printers use a thermal print head to burn the image onto a plastic Pvc Id card. If full color printing is out of your businesses budget, single color monochrome ribbons are available for most printers and are a fraction the cost of a full-color ribbon. Although not as common, there are a few inkjet Id printers available, which use high-resolution inkjet technology rather than die sublimation.

In order to layout, establish and create a photo Id, you will need to buy some card creation software. Most Id card software, from brands such as Asure Id, Episuite and Card 5, have an easy-to-use template that makes it easy to type text, paste pictures and create a base template for all your business's Id cards.

Software is available in several different packages depending on the volume of Id cards to be printed and the size of the enterprise involved. Additional options found in elite software packages, not found in entry-level packages, include industrialized photo importing capabilities, database interfacing and batch printing.

Along with the printer, software and ribbons, you will also need to buy cards. Most Id cards used are known as 30-mil Cr-80, which are the same size and thickness of a appropriate reputation card. The "80" in Cr-80 is the size of the card. Thirty-mil is the thickness of the card. Although less common, some businesses use a thinner 10-mil thickness for cards.

Businesses that use proximity cards will often use a 10 mil Cr-80 card with an adhesive back. Once printed, a backing is removed from the pressure-sensitive card where it is then stuck to the proximity card. Many Cr-80 Pvc cards are also available with smart chips (integrated circuit card) and magnetic stripes.

Once printed, many Id cards are slot punched in order to be used on a lanyard, badge reel or badge strap clip. Many businesses will also use a badge holder, horizontal or vertical, to hold the Id card where it can then be attached to a lanyard or strap clip. Using lanyards, badge reels or strap clips makes it easy to gift and access identity cards.

Maintenance on Id card printers is easy. A wide assortment of cleaning cards and ribbons are available, which help keep the thermal print head clean and running at top efficiency. Many printers will let you know when they need to be cleaned. If an older printer is being used, symptoms of a needed cleaning may include blurred text or irregular colors. Quarterly maintenance will keep the Id card out of the shop and will allow you to print Id cards on a Quarterly and uninterrupted basis.

Sunday School Activities - Thanksgiving Craft for Elementary Classes

Digital Photography while the Holidays

As the holidays get closer it is extremely foremost that you have your digital camera handy and your digital warehouse gismo cleaned and ready to go. Thanksgiving brings families together sometimes family from quite a distance. I remember when I was young my mother laid out a spread that barely fit on a discussion room table (which is what she had in her dining room).

The spread would still be the spread because well let's face it mom just loved putting on a show. Washing dishes would still be a necessity because she never believed in dish washers even after they were customary.

The desert table would be partially supplanted (being more condition aware now) with space for the printer so instant pictures could still be passed colse to to enjoy and share laughter over. While she directed the discrete photographers, every person seemed to be one sometime through the day; she rarely was the photographer herself. I wonder if that would be different now?

Digital Cameras are so easy to use and every grandchild would have one which of procedure they would have on them because, as American Express always said, they don't leave home without it. Probably one of the kids would have purchased grandma a digital photo album so bringing out the 'album' would have different meaning.

But how would the banter of family comparisons or the passing colse to of her new stack of pictures be replaced? Maybe a yearly slide show on Dvd created by one of the grand kids of procedure since they are the true digital and computer experts would be up for viewing during halftime of the game.

I think she would have liked the new instant pictures available with a digital camera (as long as she could promptly print so she could still pass them colse to the room).

So while you are venturing out during the arrival holidays remember think of grandma and either you have the excellent lighting, or have the excellent setting, or are the best digital camera photographer, she won't care as long as she has some instant prints to pass around. After all, imperfect pictures show personality and character.
